Membership Benefits

Membership within a union offers a variety of protections, benefits and avenues for support. Prescribed below are a number of ways in which the Federation is able to support its pilots to succeed in their careers.

Legal Representation

FANZP do not hold a lawyer on staff and instead utilise the services of employment law specialists SBM legal when required.
No retainer or set fees are paid to SBM Legal which ensures member fees are kept to a minimum.
Where appropriate, if a lawyer with speciality in another subject matter is required, this will be arranged.
Tim Oldfield of SBM Legal has specialised in employment law for the entirety of his career, with particular experience in industrial relations.
Tim appears regularly in the Employment Relations Authority and Employment Court.

Insurance

FANZP are proud to offer our members a diverse range of comprehensive and competitive insurance options to address a variety of unexpected life circumstances. Policies and employer contributions vary based on employment agreement coverage.

Upon commencement of employment as a turboprop pilot, Air New Zealand automatically provides the following insurances:

Loss of Effects

Covers the loss of, or damage to, luggage or reasonable/necessary personal effects accompanying the pilot for duty if the loss was not due to negligence. A maximum cover in respect of any one claim applies (may be increased at the discretion of Air New Zealand) and will be settled on an indemnity basis i.e. depreciation may apply.

Accidental Death/Permanent Disablement

In the unfortunate event of accidental death or permanent disablement as a result of an accident whilst on a tour of duty, you or your estate will receive a lump sum capital benefit. Benefits are also payable under defined physical loss conditions or partial disablement. Policy is supplementary to any benefits payable under ACC.

Indemnity

Air New Zealand provides comprehensive indemnification, both in New Zealand and internationally, covering all claims, damages, and expenses, including those incurred in legal defence, arising from any action or omission by you whilst acting within the scope of your employment or authority.

Loss of licence insurance is a voluntary policy which provides you with a Capital (lump sum payment) or Disability Benefit should you lose your licence through the revocation, withdrawal, or suspension of your medical certificate.

Members have access to the lowest premium rates for loss of licence insurance available across pilot unions at Air New Zealand. Current premium rates are set at $6 + GST per $1000 of cover.

Capital & Disability Benefits

You become eligible for a Capital Benefit 27 months following the revocation, withdrawal, or suspension of your medical certificate, or such date as the insurer determines you have suffered a permanent loss of licence (i.e. medically determined there is no prospect of your licence being reinstated).

You may apply to the insurer for a Disability Benefit payment (equal to 90% of your net earnings, less any other disability income) in the event you suffer a temporary or provisional loss of licence. If you subsequently become eligible for a lump sum payment through a permanent loss of licence, you will receive your Capital Benefit less any amount already received.

Basic Capital Benefit

Air New Zealand funds the Basic Capital Benefit for FANZP members, which provides cover of up to 5x your salary to a maximum of $163,022.

Total & Top Up Capital Benefits

In addition to funding the Basic Capital Benefit, Air New Zealand will match your premium contribution for the Total Capital Benefit, which provides cover of up to 5x your salary to a maximum of $235,475. You may purchase further additional cover up to 5x your salary to a maximum of $600,000 at your own cost.

Age-related Benefit Reductions

Once you reach age 55, your benefit will reduce by 10% each year on a prorated basis until age 65, where the benefit will have reduced to zero.

Premiums & Application

To apply, renew, or increase your cover, please visit the Pilot Insurance portal on the Korunet which will guide you through the application process. Should your salary increase during the year, you may apply to increase your cover mid-term.

Renewal documentation will be made available in advance of each policy renewal on 31 October. To ensure continuation of cover, you must submit your application along with payment within 30 days of receiving your renewal instructions.

Please note that although Air New Zealand fund the Basic Capital Benefit, you must still submit your application each year, as cover is not automatically renewed.

Insurer: Teal Insurance Limited

This voluntary policy provides you or your estate with a lump sum payment in the event of your death or on diagnosis of a terminal illness until you reach age 64 or 70 depending on the cover selected. Policy benefits are also payable if you suffer one of a defined list of physical loss conditions.

Base Cover & Auto Acceptance Limit

If you apply within 30 days of joining Air New Zealand, and are aged 44 years or under, application for Base Cover of $200,000 will be accepted without the requirement to provide evidence of good health. Applications made after 30 days will require completion of the insurer’s health questionnaire and cover will be subject to insurer acceptance.

Elected Voluntary Cover

You may apply for any amount above of cover you nominate up to $2,000,000, however for amounts exceeding the Base Cover, medical evidence is required to support your application and is not guaranteed until accepted by the insurer.

Age-related Benefit Reductions

Base Cover will reduce by $10,000 each year from age 45, however you may increase your elected voluntary cover (refer above) to offset these age-related reductions.

Spouse/Partner

You may apply for Group Life cover for your spouse or partner for any amount up to $2,000,000. Medical evidence is required to support the application of a spouse or partner, and cover is subject to insurer acceptance.

Premiums and Application

This policy is brokered through Aon who will invoice you directly for the annual premium after the policy renewal date of 1 July each year. To ensure continuation of cover, the annual premium must be paid within 30 days.

Insurer: Fidelity Life
Financial strength rating: A- (Excellent) AM Best

Group Disability insurance, also known as income protection or salary continuance, provides you with a monthly benefit for up to two years if you are diagnosed as being “Totally Disabled”. Totally Disabled means you are absent from work because you are unable to perform the normal duties of your usual occupation through illness or injury which is under regular treatment. This form of insurance may allow you to have the means to meet your financial commitments.

Base Cover & Auto Acceptance Limit

Base Cover ensures you receive consistent monthly payments equivalent to 50% of your base salary for the period you are “Totally Disabled” for up to two years, up to age 50. An initial 13 week “waiting period” applies before claim payments will commence under this policy, however any sick leave entitlements can be used during this period. If you return to work, reach age 65, or if you die, your monthly payments will cease immediately.

If you apply for Base Cover within 30 days of joining Air New Zealand, and your Base Cover does not exceed $120,000 per annum, the insurer will waive the requirement for you to provide evidence of good health. Applications made after 30 days will require completion of the insurer’s health questionnaire and cover will be subject to insurer acceptance.

Elected Voluntary Cover
You may apply to increase your cover to 75% of your base salary or $240,000 per annum, whichever is lesser. If you wish to increase your cover, you will be required to provide evidence of good health, and acceptance is not guaranteed until confirmation has been provided by the insurer.

Age-related Benefit Reductions

Cover will reduce by 5% for every year over age 50, however you may elect to purchase elected voluntary cover (refer above) to increase your cover to 75% of your base salary to offset these age-related reductions.
