About Us

The Federation is a bespoke pilot union serving Air New Zealand Pilots exclusively.

Composed of representatives from across the Air New Zealand Pilot Group, we are governed by both jet fleet and turboprop pilots and so are uniquely positioned to ensure that all members across all fleets are adequately protected and represented.

Our History

The Air New Zealand Pilots Society was formed in 1991. In 1996, a further group (Air New Zealand Aircrew Group) was formed. In 1999, the two groups merged and formed the Federation of Air New Zealand Pilots. In the early 2000s, pilots from Eagle Air, Air Nelson, and Mount Cook Airline also joined the Federation of Air New Zealand Pilots. Today, FANZP consists of around 200 pilots and simulator instructors across Air New Zealand.

Key Contract Achievements

The Federation has a history of strong and innovative contract negotiation resulting in significant benefits for its members. The following are just some examples of contract conditions negotiated by the Federation:

COVID-19 Response

Members unanimously agreed to a 25% temporary salary reduction during
the onset of COVID-19 as a proactive initiative.

FANZP representatives were instrumental in development of alternative flexible-flying arrangements which reduced redundancies on the turboprop fleets from over 100 pilots to just over 50.

Members donated $80,000 into a support fund for furlough and redundant
members. Funds used for retraining into other employment opportunities,
medical renewals, and loss of licence insurance premiums.

$30,000 of remaining funds are now providing an annual $3000 scholarship with Flying NZ Young Eagles.

Incentive Pay

Incentive pay is a significant component of a pilot’s pay based on achieved flying hours. The Federation negotiated incentive pay six years before it was adopted by non-Federation pilots. In the years between implementation for FANZP pilots and full company-wide implementation, the income of non-FANZP pilots remained substantially lower than that of FANZP pilots.

Z Days

Z days are work days credited to a pilot under certain circumstances. The pilot can elect to take a Z day as a day off or to be paid an extra day’s pay in lieu. Z days were negotiated by the Federation several years before adoption by non-Federation pilots.

Requalification Days (RQ Days)

Requalification days are single days free of rostered duty, which are added to periods of leave of 14 days or more. RQ days were negotiated by the Federation three years before inclusion in other pilots’ contracts.
